The Eagle Has Landed

Responding enthusiastically in turn to Dive and Palace Fan's recent posts was too tempting to pass up. Not that they asked for a two-way correspondence, it's just the way us six string folk are. We like this kind of post, and any others who do not can swiftly move on. There's nothing new to see here (as regular readers will already know). Since acquiring Barnesy, I have kept a beady eye on electrics for sale over on eBay. The Epi Les Paul was covetted and gained.
And then that's when it grabbed my eye...and my heart. A beat up beauty of a Tele copy that was destined to be mine.
Stu had recently bought a new Telecaster copy for £30 from that infamous internet auction site and he seems pleased with it (he said it was "alright" - Paul Reed Smith quality comes at a price way out of reach for the majority of people, whereas usable guitars can come at a much lower price). He is also pleased with his Tokai "Love Rock" (Les Paul copy). Me and him should start a band and call ourselves "The Fake Lesleys".
Where was I?
Ah yes, talking 'bout that Tele on eBay.
I watched the item as soon as I discovered it. The starting Bid was £200 and I checked the end time which indicated to me that I'd have access to the internet to put in a last second killer bid if that was needed.
Over the few days in which it was up for auction, this scrumptious work of art did not attract any bidding attention, so I wondered why. Are Telecaster fans purists? Was it a case of bolt-on snobbery? Will most of them only go for that model so long as it says "Fender" on the headstock? This guitar that was up for auction did not have any brand name on it, nothing at all. Neither was it a mass produced guitar as the filler around the mother of pearl inlay clearly suggests. People who know me might say that I am no respector of popular guitar brands (Jackson being an exception ofcourse) and I'll buy any old shit if it looks good. Nearly, but not entirely true.
Over the years, I've had a few 'lemons' (from brands such as Columbus and Kay) that play like crap. For years I was ignorant of the fact that guitars should be properly "set up" (to have the intonation and action set up for optimum playability) which makes them easier to play. I always used to get frustrated at why the strings were so high up from the fretboard on my Hohner G3T - why couldn't I play any faster like Steve Vai and Dimebag Darrell?
Buying these lemons have been a valuable education to me. It's taught me that I prefer my guitars to be hard tailed, twin humbuckered and with a neck through or set neck (glued neck to the body) construction. Bolt-on necks? What's that all about?!? I also like certain colours of guitar like faded grey or natural hues, not only do they look smart but they are neutral colours that go with the rest of your outfits hanging up in your wardrobe. Maple tops can be flame or quilt, the body tonewood may vary although mahogany is favoured. Chrome or black chrome hardware is another neutral fashion statement. Pick ups by Seymour Duncan, EMG or Bareknuckle get my full approval, as do ebony and rosewood fingerboards.
Back to bidding night at Ister towers.
Two minutes and counting.
No bids.
Not even a twitch.
Last fifteen seconds...
My mind's going doolally.
What if I don't bid?
Will the seller re-list this item at a lower starting price?
Have I been tempted by a shoddy instrument that was manufactured in a Chinese sweat shop / labour camp?
This is no time for ethics, Ister!
If you want that axe click the "confirm bid" button now!!
DO IT, YOU WUSS!!!
The devil himself spoke to me that night, like he did with Robert Johnson at the crossroads near Dockery’s plantation, but I was facing my computer terminal instead.
I succumbed to temptation.
Overdrawn.
Fucked and far from pay day.
No going to football for the next two months.
Eating flour paste mixed with water whilst playing the smallest violin.

Crystal Palace FC will have to do with one less voice to cheer them on against Wolves this Saturday. I've got an eagle of my own.

You should have said “swiftly fuck off,” but you’re too polite, and now I have to read on- Jesus, what is it with ….?
You’re mad, but I like it, and it will definitely look good with a hard egg shell gloss; any color in mind? However, what’s the action like?
I remember bleeding finger tips, and well seasoned finger tips at that, but because of the height you get tired bleeding fingers/hand not only holding down the chord, but trying desperately not to touch the strings you’re not holding down, which is impossible to do 100%
Congrats.! Enjoy it.

Look at that muthafucka! Does it sound OK? Do you have any videos of you playing?

Sean - I'm going to leave it as it is. The bloke I bought it from said that the previous owner did a 'relic' job on it.What's a 'relic' job? Some company (Fender? Gibson?) sent some new guitars to Keith Richards. Keith sent them back to the company and instructed them to "bash them about a bit, they're too new looking".Relic-ing guitars is big business. Gibson have taken Jimmy Page's Les Paul and measured every dent, scratch, belt buckle rash and fag burn in it and faithfully reproduced them on guitars for sale at premium prices for die hard Led Zep fans. Fender have followed suit as well as many other brands. The world's gone crackers! The action on this tele wannabe is surprisingly good, low but needs new strings. As for bleeding fingertips and awkward chord shapes - I never get them as I play fifths (thrash metal chords) all the time; accuracy guaranteed!

Joanne - It sounds slightly beefier than a regular Fender Telecaster. I don't exactly know the make of the pick ups but I'm sure the sound is down to its neck through body construction (mahogany neck through a swamp ash body), ensuring a tasty sustain. I've only played it through a Boss GT6 on headphones and it sounds superb on the clean channels with slight chorus and compression applied to it. The only band related vid I have is here, but it's the Hohner G3T that's featured.

thrash metal chords .... D-tuning.
"twenty twenty twenty ....... I
want-a be sedated ....."
I found D-tuning quite hard to master- everything's easy when you know how.
"Relic-ing"- - "stone washed" Saddddd! but I'd do the washing for a the bob; never look a gifted horse in the mouth as they
say;-) ;-) ;-)

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever. Its loveliness increases.

Tasteful and understated. It's very 'you' Ister.

Oooh - Rockmother Towers endorses this purchase - sometimes you just have to do these things. It's beautiful and rather special isn't it?

Haaah, I could almost hear your mouth going dry and your heart walloping in your chest as you watched the auction end seconds tick down!

You just can't help yourself can you? Just one sniff of a tasty looking bird up for grabs and that's it, you're over the top...
Nice bit of inlay there by the looks of it.
Now then, about this relic-ing business, is that what happened to me? I used to look so young and fresh...

That is a gloriously kitsch piece of work, Istvanski.
Gorgeous in oh so many wrong ways.
I love it!
This appeals to me in the same way as a John Jorgesen tele I almost bought a few years back which was mother-of-toilet-seat all over, Wonderful!
Sigh …

Annie - Why thank you, but what do you think about the guitar? ;-P

Sean - I forgot about the stonewashed stuff. Thank god for Tony Iommi's nasty industrial accident and the popularisation of down tuning.
"Let's go vintage fucking crazy!"...as Ozzy might say.

JPT - Cheers matey. It's either " very me" or "very my footie team". Perhaps it's both?

Roster - I'm greatful for your moral support over my luxurious chucking away of finances. You know you done right when Da Ro'Mutha speaks!

Eliza - You should've seen me when I took it over the threshold of my front door!

Howesy - You used to look so young and fresh to many a short sighted landlady according to Stray Photon. Perhaps it was Fisher Price that did your "relic-ing" make over?

Dive - It's the main inlay on the body that catches the eye at first (there's another eagle inlay on the headstock), but it's also the mysteriousness about it that's intriguing too. I don't know where it originates from, the seller reckons somewhere in Asia. Sometimes not knowing is better than the truth.

Guitars definitely seem to bring out the wordsmith in you Ist.

Not sure what that half-arsed comment means. If anything. But it's the best I can do at the moment. I'll bin it if you like.

That's OK, Dick.
I'm glad you appreciated my half-arsed post!

She is like a good woman. Mad and beautiful, although she might only be loved by her dad !

I think she is bloody lovely though. Would love to see some more pics.

Shame re Wolves as I am still not going at the moment and have my season ticket going spare !

Eliza - Ooh, a tour of a premium guitar maker would be a good thing to do. I was thinking about a holiday to the States so I could visit all the great guitar builders like Gibson, Fender, Washburn etc. Then I'd finish off in a Sun Studios recording session. How cool would that be?
Thanks for the link!

Palace Fan - I'll try and get some more pics done when I get the time. Shame about that season ticket of yours...
