Those of you who know me in a personal way (not too personal, mind) outside the realms of the blogosphere will indeed know that I just happen to think that The Damned are the best English band that have existed - ever...ever! Schools up and down the country should revise the history curriculum to make the kids aware that such a truly vital band is of utmost importance to the general well-being mental state of children throughout our green and pleasant swamp-land.
Below is a clip from YouTube (as you can tell, I'm getting rather addicted to that site as this is my 3rd YouTube related posting within the space of a week. Well, it's either that, or a penchant for laziness...I mean, no-one gives a flying fuck what happened to me on Valentine's Day, do they?).
The clip below is one that I've never seen before, showing The Damned in their early days with lead singer "Dracula" as the narrator calls him. Working in Pathway Studio, an early gig (possibly the same one as they filmed for the promo of New Rose) and a bit of general malarkey elsewhere. I had to have this posted here, it's an Important Historical Document. Watch, listen, take it in and learn.

Fucking hell that was an absolute GEM of a piece. Stuff like that makes me LOVE youtube. I'm glad I helped make some 'working class heroes rich' - the Damned are one of my all time favourite bands as you know. I would happily put Fan Club on every podcast but somehow I don't think everyone would appreciate it as much as me . Because I'm a sad cow I've amassed quite a few old punk spots on my youtube favourites - I can send you the links if you are interested.
Punks were so villified weren't they? It all seems so naive now considering 4 kids have shot 4 other kids in a week and we are at the bottom of the world league tables for everything relating to being caring or nice to kids. A teenage girl said 'thanks you stupid fucking bitch' to me the other week for letting her cross the road. The alternative was to let all the other cars pile into her. I nearly got out of the car and let rip myself but then I thought better of it as I would have been arrested or fined for haranguing a teenager!
Well at risk of sounding like a miserable old cnut I still can't get your Youtube links to work. I did however take matters into my own hands and track down The Damned on the actual Youtube site and I was much impressed by their energy and enthusiasm. Edith.
great bit of footage, cheers Ist! And a glimpse of Sir Nick Lowe behind the faders, was it not, as a bonus? Excellent stuff.
RoMo - The sad thing is I heard on the radio today that one of the shot kids used to go to my old school in Tooting. I knew it was a rough place but...Christ! Armed police patrolling sarf London's hotspots - this is what it's come to.
To think how all those anti-punk protestors that were given a voice on The Great Rock and Roll Swindle speaking about yet another type of music that they believed had a bad influence on the nation's youth. This was before gangtsa rap but a long time after certain 'pillars of society' spoke out against rock'n'roll in the mid to late fifties. It's these people that should 'change the record'.
Don't speak out against kids if you see 'em mis-behaving or they give you lip, they'll only shoot you!
DH - Glad you eventually got around to seeing the clip in question. Did you intend to sign yourself off as 'Edith'? Are you trying to tell me something?
What's it to be? Dick, or no Dick?
Stray - Yep, Lord Lowe puffing on a Senior Service cigarette whilst at the controls in Pathway studio, somewhere in norf London.
I lived in Sarf London (Clapham) for nearly ten years until 2000 and Clapham/Tooting was always a bit lawless - they just let everybody get on with it - that's why it's all kicking off bigtime now. Put it this way - I was burgled three times by the guy across the road - the police were useless and bungled it all by putting us in the same waiting room pre-interview! Well done everybody. In the end we were on nodding terms as I figured he was just a thief as opposed to a killer and one day I went over and asked for some of my things back. Too late - everything was sold but he didn't burgle me again after that. Mainly because there was nothing left I hasten to add!
I was in an Edith mood that's all. Dick.
I was playing Nick Lowe's Heart of the City yesterday and Betty said it was more or less a replica of Neat Neat Neat. So the pub rockers and punk rockers fed off each other.
Dracula, indeed.
