A recent RoMo post (describing her debauched galavanting in the Soho area) reminded me of the Comic Strip episodes that used to appear on Channel 4. Of course, it was all good fun back in the anarchic days of the early eighties and for many a school kid "The Young Ones" was the tele-visual highlight of the week. Featuring the comic talents of Keith Allen, Nigel Planer, Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders amongst others, they were a group of people who started off doing their sketches on stage in the very same area where present day American tourists currently go to get their kicks.

I bought the DVD box set some months ago and settled down to watch the episodes again, content in the knowledge that I wouldn't have to dig out my primitive Comic Strip VHS collection that are so old and by now have accumulated more drop-outs than an entire population of half-arsed college students. As I watched them, I was dissapointed to realise that most of the episodes have dated terribly, and what used to be funny became rather mundane. Only a few of the older instalments still make me chuckle, namely both of the Bad News episodes, A Fistful of Traveller's Cheques and Mr Jolly Lives Next Door (the latter starring the late great Peter Cook as a blood thirsty psychopath). Nostalgia isn't what it used to be, folks.
JifSpace Pluggage: I was glad to see that the JifDumpAlliance has resurrected his MySpace profile. Songs featured on it are "Here Come the Anthrapoids", "Penelope's Second Belly Button" and "You Sad Old Git".

I remember "A fistful of travellers cheques" and a couple of others, but overall the memory is vague.. and your right, viewing them now would probably make you wonder what on earth you saw in it!
As for the instrumental (not song) preliminary ideas and flourishes are all in place through long and extensive R&D. I will have to wait until my smegging roster at 'swill wash trains' allows me the time to do something about it!
Oh, yes....that's why I've only posted three tunes on myspace...ha ha.
Oh, and ta for the plug, I never advertised myself 'coz it was going th remain lo-key for a bit until I launched 'my new shit' you jumpeth the gun, it don't matter though!
I liked the Famous Five one. That still holds up quite well. It's the 'gallons and galloons' bit that I still quote to this day.
Oh god - I've been named and shamed and possibly been alluded to as debauched and oh so 80's by the sound of it Mr Ister. I'm never drinking that much again. It was fun at the time though.
I saw a few Comic Strips a couple of years back and I know what you mean. You have just reminded me that I've got all the Young Ones series on vhs somewhere up in the loft. I would like to think they haven't dated as I loved them at the time. I'll dig them out and let you know. They were brilliant.
Ooh - Jif and Stray on munterspace - I'm going there next.
Tara for now.
Blimey, if I'm not mistaken, Lee Van Cleef has half-inched Jif's minces. Stone me and no mistake guvnor...
I do vaguely remember "A fistful of travellers cheques". Quite exciting I thought. Now I'm off to Myspace to check on Mr.Alliance. It's all go.
JDA - Well, I'll look forward to hearing the new 'un on yer myspace thang.
Molly - Ah yes, the 'Five Go Mad' ones were ok. Whatsisname from Crossroads ended up being a nonce, didn't he?
RoMo - I may have reported on your debauchery, but I never said that it made you a bad person! If anything, it reinforces my belief that you're human (and that's without you taking a lug on other people's crack pipes!)...The Young Ones were more accessable to watch than most of the Comic Strip episodes and I'm glad that they only ended up making two series of that. Rik and Ade went on to greater things, namely "Bottom" (remember the Hammersmith riots episode?).
Howesy - It's very strange how a former Hollywood star has settled in Epsom. Most have moved to Surbiton.
DH - "Fistful of Traveller's Cheques" was one of the best. Keith Allen was spot on as the rancid manager of the "Hotel Bastardos".
"...and no flushing de guns downa de lavatory! Everybody happy, lalalalilala!"
hey Istvan....did you know that RoMo has a friend who goes by the name of 'soapy tit wank?' well you do now...!!
Is STW on MySpace?
Disgraceful, these media types...
I know - we are all revolting.
