Cambridge's most famous son, Syd Barrett (one of the founding members of Pink Floyd), has passed away a couple of days ago. I've just heard an announcement on the radio today.
Biographies of this strange but creative bloke can be found all over the net, so I won't waffle on about him here. Many mates of mine will surely be a bit down about this as I am. Creatively he peaked as he wrote most of the Piper At The Gates Of Dawn album which was released in 1967. It's a great collection of songs, Bike being my favourite. See Emily Play and Arnold Layne were also classics of their time.
He gave up on the music industry a few years after, amidst recurring acid trips that have probably done him no favours since, and he chose to live the rest of his days with his family back home in Cambridge. Who needs fame when regular royalties were coming in?
R.I.P. Syd.
